A FAMILY GIVING BACK

The Joyce family knows something about giving back. Last year, they gathered canned goods for the Independence School District's Holiday Helpers program and helped sort items for delivery.

"It's very important that people realize there's always a time in your life that you need help, no matter who you are," says Tammy Joyce.

She knows from experience. Just two years before, the Joyce family was on the receiving end of The help from Holiday Helpers.

John Joyce was a hard-working truck driver who had been laid off. Tammy was taking care of four boys and her disabled mother who was living with the family. They were barely making ends meet.

Tammy says, "We had some food in the house, but not a whole lot. There was no money for presents. I was worried there would be no Christmas for our kids."

How Holiday Helpers Saved Christmas

Holiday Helpers arrived at their house with gifts for the whole family, which the parents wrapped themselves, and a grocery store gift certificate so they could provide Christmas dinner.

For both John and Tammy, it turned the holiday season from stressful to joyful.

Now that both have jobs, they hope others will continue to donate so "the next family will be able to get on its feet and help out someone else in need."

Who Does Holiday Helpers Reach?

Last year, Independence School District's Holiday Helpers campaign was able to assist more than 1,500 of those in our community not reached by other programs.

In addition to food and presents, Holiday Helpers was able to provide toiletries, utility assistance, and fill other needs. The district expects even more need this year. That is why we need you!
